ITV is hoping a lavish new period drama about Queen Victoria will replace Downton Abbey in viewers’ affections.

The eight-part series, Victoria, will follow the early years of her reign, from “rebellious teenager” who became queen at 18 to a monarch whose reign was “beset by scandal and sleaze”.

It comes from the makers of BBC One’s Sunday night hit Poldark and is expected to air in the slot vacated by Downton, which comes to an end this Christmas after six seasons.

Downton is ITV’s most popular drama and executives are in need of a ratings winner to replace it.

Victoria, which begins filming in September and will hit screens next year, promises the same blend of upstairs-downstairs drama. Casting is to be announced.
